FOUR MONTHS BEFORE CHAD

Toombs sat on his couch, bare feet up on the coffee table, his laptop open on his lap, and let his eyes flick back and forth from Shock to Conti to Aydelotte. The feeds from the mini Chameleon bugs were good, though some resolution had to be sacrificed because of the small size.

Shock was in her lab, bent over a trove of documents recently received in the ongoing barter arrangement with Ayoob Alazaki. Toombs was not skilled in ancient languages, but he could at least tell that the scroll she had open was written in Greek. That told him it was part of the document cache found by the ISIS clowns who’d fallen into Cave 13 at Qumran. Something, Shock told him, that had been rescued from the Library of Alexandria. Interesting.

In another lab, Dr. Conti was tap-tap-tapping away at her computer, adjusting the graphic of a 3-D model of a section of ergot DNA.

“Dr. Frankenstein,” he murmured.

As for Aydelotte, he was talking to Harith al-Wazir on a video call, but unfortunately the Chameleon was in the wrong place to allow Toombs to see the ISIS leader’s face. Aydelotte was animated and talking fast in English, but his desk was too far from the bug’s tiny mic. Toombs knew he would have to get into Aydelotte’s monitoring room again and place another mic closer to that desk.

He twisted the cap off a beer, took a small sip, and continued to watch.

There was always something new to learn.
